| Closing in on the Castle. Concord Monitor, July 23, 1998 The town of Gilford is only a few weeks away from closing the sale of Kimball's Castle to a local developer, according to David Caron, the town administrator. Gilford has agreed to sell the castle and 20 acres surrounding it to Historic Inns of New England for $100,000., Caron said. He said the remaining acreage will remain conservation land. The Castle, which was built in 1894 by Benjamin Kimball, a Concord railroad magnate from Concord, has lain empty since Kimball's daughter-in-law died in 1960. No property taxes have been paid on the 265-acre estate for about 30 years, Caron said. The town sold the castle for relatively little because the building needs substantial renovation, Caron said. The developer, who renovates buildings, plans to turn the castle into a resort restaurant, he said.
